the Montessori Way!

If you walk into the kindergarten class at the Circle of Hope Daycare at Mama na Dada from 8:30-9:00am on Monday, Wednesday, or Friday, you will witness the Montessori in action. This is what we found out by chance one morning and I have been very curious to learn more ever since!

It turns out the kindergarten recently adopted the Montessori model with the introduction of a new schoolteacher two years ago and it has been very successful. Leaving children to work and learn on their own helps them to develop finger muscles, increase their imagination, and improves their performance in grade school.

It also helps to have a favorable teacher-student ratio, which is 8:1 at the daycare, so that the teacher can really get to know each child, his or her strengths and weaknesses, and personalize lesson plans to benefit the group of children as a whole. Furthermore, although all 8 children in the kindergarten are partial or full-orphans, they have a very caring, responsible, and loving mother in Eunice, their schoolteacher.

Interestingly, the school year in Kenya begins in January. Here’s a sample schedule:

  • Term 1: January-March

  • Term 2: May-July

  • Term 3: Sept.-Nov.

Enjoy! Just about 1 week left in Kunya and I can tell we are really going to miss playing and getting to know the daycare children.
